รูปกรรมของบุพบท  objects of prepositions   Gerunds (เจอรันสฺ) เป็นกริยารูปหนึ่งที่ลงท้ายด้วย ing และทำหน้าที่เป็น คำนาม (noun) ฉะนั้นตำแหน่งของคำกริยาประเภทนี้ในประโยคคือ ประธาน (subject) กรรมตรง (direct object) ประธานเสริม (subject complement) และกรรมของบุพบท (object of preposition)
ตำแหน่งของ Gerunds

Gerunds (เจอรันสฺ) เป็นกริยารูปหนึ่งที่ลงท้ายด้วย ing และทำหน้าที่เป็น คำนาม (noun) ฉะนั้นตำแหน่งของคำกริยาประเภทนี้ในประโยคคือ ประธาน (subject) กรรมตรง (direct object) ประธานเสริม (subject complement) และกรรมของบุพบท (object of preposition)
ตำแหน่งของ Gerunds
1. ประธาน (subject)
ตัวอย่าง
Traveling might satisfy your desire for new experiences.
การเดินทางอาจจะสนองตอบความปรารถนาด้วยประสบการณ์ใหม่ๆ ของคุณ
หมายเหตุ กรณีนี้รูปกริยา Traveling เป็นประธาน ก็เพราะวางอยู่หน้ากริยาหลักของประโยค นั่นคือ might satisfy
2. กรรมตรง (direct object)
ตัวอย่าง
I hope that you appreciate my offering you this opportunity.
ผมหวังว่าคุณจะชื่นชอบการที่ผมให้โอกาสคุณครั้งนี้
หมายเหตุ กรณีนี้ my offering you this opportunity เป็นกรรมตรง ก็ เพราะเป็นการตอบคำถามว่า ชื่นชอบ <appreciate> “อะไร’’
3. ประธานเสริม (subject complement)
ตัวอย่าง
His favorite activity is playing golf.
กิจกรรมที่ชื่นชอบของเขาคือการเล่นกอล์ฟ
= Playing golf is his favorite activity.
หมายเหตุ กรณีนี้ playing golf เป็นเสมือนประธานเสริม อยู่หลัง verb to be “is” ส่วน Playing golf ที่วางอยู่หน้าประโยค ทำหน้าที่ประธาน
4. กรรมของบุพบท (object of preposition)
ตัวอย่าง
She suffered for years without complaining.
เธอทนทุกข์มาหลายปีโดยไม่ปริปากบ่น
หมายเหตุ กรณีนี้รูปกริยา complaining วางอยู่หลังบุพบท <preposition> คือ “without” จึงถือว่าเป็นกรรมของบุพบท
ประเภทของ Gerunds
จากตัวอย่างข้างบน อาจจะกล่าวคร่าวๆ ได้ว่า gerunds อาจจะเป็นกริยารูป ing ที่ทำหน้าที่นามที่เป็นคำเดี่ยว เรียกว่า single-word gerunds และที่เป็นวลี คือมีถ้อยคำอื่นตามหลังกริยารูป ing ที่ทำหน้าที่นาม เรียกว่า gerund phrase เช่น
single-word gerunds         gerund phrases
traveling                                           traveling to the countryside
waiting                                              waiting for a bus
การใช้     
สิ่งที่ท่านผู้อ่านจะได้ศึกษาและเรียนรู้ต่อไปนี้ นับว่ามีความสำคัญและต้องจดจำ หรือฝึกใช้ให้บ่อย โดยผู้เขียนจะขอกล่าวเป็นกรณีไปดังนี้

1. gerunds after verbs
เราใช้ gerunds เมื่อวางอยู่หลังคำกริยา (verbs) ต่อไปนี้ ได้แก่

ผมชื่นชอบการเล่นบทเพลงนั้นของเขา

เราชอบการเขียนมากกว่าการพูดของเขาเกี่ยวกับเรื่องสำคัญๆ
Do you mind opening the window?
คุณจะรังเกียจไหมครับที่จะเปิดหน้าต่างให้หน่อย
Mother doesn’t like me wearing this suit.
แม่ไม่ชอบให้ดิฉันสวมใส่ชุดนี้
หมายเหตุ มีบ่อยที่หน้า gerund มี object pronouns เช่น me, him, her, them, us, you, it หรือ possessive adjectives เข่น my, his, her, their, our, your, its เมื่อวางอยู่หลังคำกริยาดังกล่าวมา

(1) ใช้รูป possessive adjective + gerund
When she hears her husband’s (whistle) she accompanies it with (sing).
→When she hears his whistling she accompanies it with singing.
(2) ใช้รูป object pronoun + gerund
I remember George (take) out his cheque book but I didn’t notice him (write) it.
→I remember him taking out his cheque book but I didn’t notice him writing it.
2. gerunds after prepositions
เราใช้ gerunds เมื่อวางอยู่หลังคำบุพบท ได้แก่ for, of, on, after, before, with, without, by, from, about, at
ตัวอย่าง
Instead of celebrating at home, they went out to dinner.
แทนที่จะฉลองกันอยู่ที่บ้าน พวกเขากลับออกไปทานอาหารเย็นนอกบ้านShe made a wish before blowing out the candles.
เธออธิษฐานก่อนจะเป่าเทียนให้ดับ
He was fined for driving without lights.
เขาถูกปรับฐานขับรถโดยไม่เปิดไฟ
3. gerunds after adjectives with prepositions
เราใช้ gerunds เมื่อวางอยู่หลังคำคุณศัพท์ (adjectives) ที่มีบุพบท (prepositions) ตามหลัง ได้แก่

4. gerunds after verbs with prepositions.
เราใช้ gerunds กับคำกริยา (verbs) ที่มีบุพบท (prepositions) ตามหลัง ได้แก่

5. gerunds after verbs and objects
เราใช้ gerunds หลังคำกริยา (verbs) ที่มักมีกรรม (objects) รองรับ ดังโครงสร้าง verb + object + gerund ได้แก่
find         hear         notice    see
watch     feel         observe     smell
ตัวอย่าง
The waiter heard a man yawning.
พนักงานเสิร์ฟได้ยินชายคนหนึ่งหาว
Did you notice them waving?
คุณสังเกตเห็นพวกเขาโบกมือหรือเปล่า
หมายเหตุ คำกริยาดังกล่าวในข้อนี้ เป็นกริยาที่เกี่ยวข้องกับการรับรู้สึก (verbs of sensation/perception) ซึ่งสามารถตามด้วยรูป bare infinitive (หรือกริยช่อง 1 ที่ไม่มี to (ข้างหน้า) ความแตกต่างอยู่ที่ action กล่าวคือ หากหลังกริยาเหล่านี้ ใช้รูป gerund จะแสดงสิ่งที่กำลังเกิดขึ้น แต่ถ้าใช้ bare infinitive จะไม่เน้นสิ่งที่กำลังเกิดขึ้น ดังนั้น ในตัวอย่างดังกล่าวข้างบน อาจจะใช้ bare infinitive ก็ได้ ดังนี้
The waiter heard a man yawn.
Did you notice them wave?
6. gerunds after “go”
เราใช้ gerund หลังกริยา go (รวม went และ gone) เมื่อตามด้วย คำกริยา (verbs) ที่แสดงความหมายเชิงกิจกรรมสันทนาการ (recreational activities) ได้แก่
boat            fish        sail         ski
bowl            hike        shop     swim
camp        hunt        sightsee     windsurf
dance         jog        skate     canoe
ตัวอย่าง
I went shopping with my husband yesterday.
ดิฉันได้ไปจับจ่ายซื้อของกับสามีของดิฉันเมื่อวานนี้
Would you like to go boating with me?
คุณอยากไปพายเรือเล่นกับผมไหม
We went sightseeing around Bangkok two days ago.
เราไปเที่ยวชมรอบกรุงเททฯ เมื่อสองวันที่ผ่านมา
7. gerunds with passive meaning
หลังคำกริยาบางคำ ตามด้วยรูป gerunds ซึ่งให้ความหมายเชิงถูกกระทำ (passive meaning) คำกริยาเหล่านี้ ได้แก่
need     want     merit     deserve
ตัวอย่าง
Your hair needs cutting.
= Your hair needs to be cut.
ผมของคุณสมควรจะได้รับการตัดได้แล้ว
My shoes want mending.
= My shoes want to be mended.
รองเท้าของผมควรจะได้รับการซ่อมได้แล้ว
His brave action deserves rewarding.
= His brave action deserves to be rewarded.
การกระทำที่กล้าหาญของเขาสมควรที่จะได้รับรางวัล
8. gerunds after some expressions
เราใช้ gerunds หลังข้อความบางอย่าง ได้แก่
It’s a waste of time/money/…
It’s no use …
It’s (not) worth …
There’s no point (in) …
have fun/a good time/trouble/difficulty/…
spend/ waste time
What about …? (ใช้เพี่อการเสนอแนะ)
How about…? (ใช้เพื่อการเสนอแนะ)
ตัวอย่าง
We had a good time watching the ice skating competition.
เราได้รับความสนุกสนานที่ได้ชมการแข่งสเก็ตน้ำแข็ง
It’s not worth reparing the machine.
มัน ไม่คุ้มค่าที่จะซ่อมเครื่องจักรดังกล่าว
It’s a waste of time watching that movie.
เสียเวลาเปล่าที่จะชมภาพยนตร์เรื่องนั้น
ต่างความหมาย
คำกริยาบางคำ เมื่อตามด้วยรูป gerunds และ infinitives จะให้ความหมายที่แตกต่างกัน ทั้งนี้การจะเลือกใช้รูป gerunds หรือ infinitives ต้องอาศัยการตีความหมายเป็นสำคัญ ได้แก่
1. remember + gerunds vs remember + to-infinitives
ตัวอย่าง
I remember posting the letter.
ฉันจำได้ว่าได้ส่งจดหมายไปแล้ว
I must remember to post the letter.
ฉันจะต้องจำให้ได้ว่าจะต้องส่งจดหมาย
หมายเหตุ จากตัวอย่างที่ใช้รูป remember + gerund หมายถึง “จำได้ในสิ่งที่ได้ทำไปแล้ว’’ ส่วนรูป remember + to-infinitive หมายถึง “จำไว้ว่าจะทำสิ่งนั้นๆ” แสดงว่ายัง ไม่ได้กระทำสิ่งนั้น
2. forget + gerunds VS forget + to-infinitives
ตัวอย่าง
I forgot taking the exam.
ผมลืมไปว่าได้เข้าสอบแล้ว
I forgot to take the exam yesterday.
ผมลืมเข้าสอบเมื่อวานนี้
หมายเหตุ จากตัวอย่างที่ใช้รูป forget + gerund หมายถึง “ลืมในสิ่งที่เกิดขึ้นไปแล้ว” ส่วนรูป forget + to-infmitive หมายถึง “ลืมที่จะกระทำสิ่งนั้น’’
3. regret + gerunds vs regret + to-infinitives
ตัวอย่าง
I regret saying what I said.
ผมเสียใจที่พูดในสิ่งที่พูดออกไป
I regret to say I feel ill.
ผมเสียใจที่จะกล่าวว่าผมป่วย
หมายเหตุ จากตัวอย่างที่ใช้รูป regret + gerund หมายถึง “เสียใจในสิ่งที่ได้ทำไปแล้ว’’ ส่วนรูป regret + to-infinitive หมายถึง” เสียใจในสิ่งที่จะกระทำ’’ แสดงว่าไม่ได้ทำมาในอดีต
สรุป จากกรณีการใช้ที่นำมาเปรียบเทียบกันทั้งในรูปของการตามด้วย gerunds และ to-infinitives พอจะสรุปรวบยอดเพื่อให้เป็นแนวคิดในการตัดสินใจใช้คำกริยาทั้ง 3 คำ ระหว่างตามด้วย gerunds และ infinitives ได้ดังนี้
ก. ตามด้วย gerunds หมายถึง อดีต (past) คือ ได้เกิดขึ้นไปแล้ว
ข. ตามด้วย to-infinitives หมายถึง ปัจจุบัน (present) หรือ อนาคต (future) คือ ยังไม่เกิด หรือยังไม่ได้กระทำ
4. try + gerunds VS try + to-infinitives
ตัวอย่าง
I try holding my breath.
ผมทดลองกลั้นลมหายใจ
I try to hold my breath.
ผมพยายามกลั้นลมหายใจ
หมายเหตุ เมื่อใช้ try + gerund จะหมายถึง “ทดลอง’’ (experiment) เหมือนกับการทดลองทางวิทยาศาสตร์แต่ถ้าใช้ try + to-infinitive จะหมายถึง “พยายาม’’ คือ พยายามที่จะทำบางสิ่งบางอย่าง
5. stop + gerunds vs stop + to-infinitives
ตัวอย่าง
You must stop smoking.
คุณจะต้องหยุด (เลิก) สูบบุหรี่
He stopped his car to smoke.
เขาจอดรถเพื่อจะสูบบุหรี่
หมายเหตุ เมื่อใช้ Stop + gerund จะหมายถึง “หยุดทำในสิ่งที่กำลังทำอยู่” แต่ถ้าใช้ stop + to-infinitive จะหมายถึง “หยุด (สิ่งหนึ่ง) เพื่อจะทำอีกสิ่งหนึ่ง”
6. go on + gerunds vs go on + to-infinitives
ตัวอย่าง
Go on talking.
พูตต่อไป
We went on to discuss finance.
เราได้หันไปพูดถึงเรื่องการเงิน
หมายเหตุ เมื่อใช้ go on + gerund จะหมายถึง “ดำเนินต่อไปในสิ่งที่กำลังทำอยู่’’ แต่ถ้าใช้ go on + to-infinitive จะหมายถึง “เปลี่ยนไปทำอีกสิ่งที่ต่างไปจากสิ่งเดิม”
7. mean + gerunds vs mean + to-infinitives
ตัวอย่าง
Having a party tonight will mean working extra hours tomorrow.
การจัดงานเลี้ยงคืนนี้จะหมายถึงการทำงานล่วงเวลาเพิ่มขึ้นพรุ่งนี้
I mean to work harder next year.
ผมตั้งใจจะทำงานหนักขึ้นปีหน้า
หมายเหตุ เมื่อใช้ mean + gerund คำว่า mean = signify แปลว่า “หมายถึง” ส่วนเมื่อใช้ mean – to-infinitive คำว่า mean = intend แปลว่า “ตั้งใจ”
