Article a/an, the
1) การใช้ a และ an
a และ an มีความหมายเหมือนกัน a/an ใช้นำหน้าคำนามนับได้เท่านั้น โดยคำนามนั้นต้องเป็นเอกพจน์ที่ได้รับการกล่าวถึงเป็นครั้งแรกอย่างไม่เฉพาะเจาะจง เช่น
A student came to see you this morning.
I bought a new dress yesterday.
John is a clever boy.
เมื่อคำนามนั้นเป็นพหูพจน์ที่ได้รับการกล่าวถึงเป็นครั้งแรกอย่างไม่เฉพาะเจาะจง ไม่ต้องมี article นำหน้า เช่น
Students must not smoke.
Books are expensive these days.
John and Jimmy are clever boys.
แต่ a และ an มีข้อแตกต่างกันคือ
a ใช้หน้าคำที่ขึ้นต้นด้วยพยัญชนะหรือขึ้นต้นด้วยสระที่ออกเสียงเป็นพยัญชนะ เช่น
a woman a horse a university
a European a used car a one-way street
an ใช้หน้าคำที่ขึ้นต้นด้วยสระ (a, e, i, o, u) หรือคำที่ขึ้นต้นด้วย h ที่ไม่ออกเสียง เช่น
an ant an island an unfair punishment
an hour an egg an honest person
ใช้ an นำหน้าคำที่ขึ้นต้นด้วยพยัญชนะ แต่ออกเสียงเป็นสระ เช่น
an MP an SOS an “X”
2) การใช้ the
ใช้นำหน้าคำนามที่ได้รับการกล่าวถึงอย่างชี้เฉพาะ เช่น เมื่อคำนามนั้นได้รับการกล่าวถึงมาแล้ว 1 ครั้ง เช่น
A: A boy came to see you yesterday.
B: Do you know the boy’s name?
คำนามที่ได้รับการกล่าวถึงอย่างชี้เฉพาะนี้อาจจะเป็น
– คำนามที่นับได้ เป็นเอกพจน์หรือพหูพจน์
– คำนามที่นับไม่ได้
ใช้นำหน้าคำนามที่เรียกของที่มีอยู่หนึ่งเดียว เช่น
the earth the sun the sky
คำนามชี้เฉพาะ เนื่องจากมีกลุ่มคำอื่นมาขยายทำให้ชี้เฉพาะ เช่น
the girl in pink
the man that you met
ใช้นำหน้าคำนามที่มีคำคุณศัพท์ (adjective) ขั้น superlative นำหน้าหรือมีคำว่า first, second, third, etc. นำหน้า เช่น
the best speech the last day the second row the only way
ใช้นำหน้าคำ first, second, third, etc เมื่อคำเหล่านั้นทำหน้าที่เป็นคำสรรพนาม (pronoun) เช่น
the first the fourth the tenth
ใช้นำหน้าคำนามที่เรียกสัตว์หรือสิ่งของในความหมายแทนทั้งกลุ่มสัตว์หรือสิ่งของชนิดนั้น ๆ เช่น
The seal is an endangered species.
The koala lives mainly in trees.
ใช้นำหน้าคำนามที่เป็นชื่อเครื่องดนตรี เช่น
Kathy plays the piano, but Nick plays the violin.
ใช้นำหน้าคำนามที่เป็นชื่อเฉพาะบางคำ โดยปกติชื่อเฉพาะไม่ต้องมี article นำหน้า แต่ชื่อเฉพาะบางคำต้องมี the นำหน้า เช่น
– ชื่อคลอง (canal) เช่น the Suez Canal
– ชื่อแม่น้ำ (river) เช่น the Thames, the Nile
– ชื่อทะเลและมหาสมุทร (sea and ocean) เช่น the Red Sea, the Indian Ocean
– ชื่ออ่าว (gulf, bay) เช่น the Gulf of Mexico, the Persian Gulf; ช่องแคบ
(channel, straight) เช่น the English Channel, the Bering Straight;
แหลม/คาบสมุทร (peninsula) เช่น the Indo-China Peninsula
– หมู่เกาะ (groups of islands) เช่น the Philippines
– ทะเลทราย (desert) เช่น the Sahara Desert
– เทือกเขา (chains of mountains) เช่น the Alps
– ประเทศที่มีชื่อเป็นพหูพจน์ เช่น the Netherlands
– ชื่อสถานที่บางแห่ง เช่น the Mandarin Oriental, the Grand Hotel
– ชื่อเฉพาะที่มี of เป็นส่วนประกอบ ดังนี้ noun + of + noun เช่น
the Tower of London
– ชื่อเฉพาะที่มีคำคุณศัพท์นำหน้า ดังนี้ adjective + noun เช่น
the National Gallery, the High Street
etc.
